Last night I went to @smokejazzclub and was forced to pay $30 for a meal I’d didn’t want and didn’t order. Tickets were $60 and there is an “entree minimum” which is something that I’ve never heard of before. I told the waiter I just wanted drinks and spend $35 on 2 drinks, more than the burger my friend at my table ordered. I told the waiter if there’s an issue bring the manager over. Of course no one said anything. When paying the bill we were charged an additional $30 for NOT ORDERING FOOD! I spent $100 for the evening already ($60 tickets which is astronomical for a one hour jazz set plus my $35 of drinks) and they tried to harass me and con me into giving them $30 for not eating their (shitty) food. This is outrageous and it’s an example of how and why the “jazz” establishments continue to find new ways to screw people. It’s becoming more and more evident that we need to better support ourselves and our community. Stop supporting venues whose only interest is turning a max profit. We support ARTISTS PATRONS and Independent VENUES so that no one has to go through this type of experience. Paul Stache the owner is running a scam. There are dozens of incredible venues across NYC that provide the same great music with much nicer and better accommodations and don’t overcharge. Even the most corporate venues like JALC and Blue Note would never behave in this way. Shame on Smoke, Paul, and the staff and I encourage all of you to boycott them and their endeavors. @abc7ny @fox5ny @1010wins @betterbusinessbureau_ @nbcnewyork let’s investigate these con artists

Story time! A word from artistic director @mbfmusic My love for jazz music was consecrated at a small club on Peachtree st in midtown Atlanta called Churchill Grounds. Our ‘church’ was every Thursday night as @danielplatzman and I would eagerly head over to hear and feel the sounds of @russellgunn with the best musicians in atl like Lil John Roberts, Terreon Gully, Kebbi Williams, Brian Hogans, & Takana Miyamoto who would join him in the house band. The owner, our recently departed friend Sam Yi, would let us in underage as long as we would buy some hummus and a coke. After a couple years of our ritual I got the courage up to ask Gunn if I could sit in with the band. He was gracious enough to let me and I performed well enough to be able to sit in regularly. Eventually I was called on to join the band on a number of occasions, including this photo taken on New Year’s Eve 2006. These formative experiences performing with a true artist and musician are what shaped me as a young player and gave me the eagerness, energy and determination to pursue my dreams in music. Without ever knowing it, Russell Gunn has completely impacted my life positively through his fierce trumpet playing and compositional prowess as well as his attitude and realness. Ridgewood Jazz Fest exists to cultivate an audience through highlighting artists who deserve the brightest spotlight. It’s my honor to be able to present a musician who has always maintained the highest level of artistry and has created some of the most compelling albums of the past 3 decades. On August 28th at Trans Pecos, Russell will lead the Ridgewood Jazz Fest All stars through some of his albums including Ethnomusicology 1-3, Love Stories, and Krunk Jazz which celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2026. Sunday! We’re back at our home away from home Dada bar for the monthly RJF jam session. This week’s house band features Julian Shore an incredible artist whose piano skills have been featured with some of today’s icons of jazz including Kurt Rosenwinkel, Brian Blade and John Pattitucci. His latest album Sub Rosa is a great example of the modern jazz piano trio. Mike Mitchell aka Blaque Dynamite is a virtuoso who is known for his energy and dynamic performances. Aside from his own projects he’s shared the stage with Erykah Badu, Stanley Clarke, and Herbie Hancock. Bassist Michael Feinberg is a powerful artist with 10 records under his belt. His bass playing has been heard backing up legends and luminaries including Jon Batiste, Dave Liebman, Jeff Tain Watts and Aaron Parks.
